Physiotherapy in Borough, London - For climbers, office workers & everyday injuries

Helping you move better, recover faster, and stay active

At The Font Climbing, we’re excited to launch physiotherapy sessions from our Borough location in Central London.

While we’re known for climbing, our physiotherapy service is for everyone; whether you spend your days at a desk near London Bridge, train regularly at the gym, run around the city, or simply want to move without pain.

Muscle aches, recurring injuries, stiff backs, sore shoulders, and tendon pain are incredibly common in busy city lifestyles. The good news? Most issues can improve significantly with the right support, movement, and rehabilitation plan.

Let’s introduce you to our resident Physiotherapist, Ben Chong:

“There are plenty of physiotherapists who learn the job through textbooks and clinics alone. My journey’s been a bit different.

Before I ever treated a patient, I spent over 10 years as a competitive international gymnast. That experience shaped how I see the body - how it moves, how it adapts, and what happens when things go wrong. I also grew up around physiotherapists, so from an early age I understood how important good rehab and guidance can be when you’re pushing your limits.

Now, I’m a senior physiotherapist with five years of clinical experience, including two years in the NHS and three in private practice. Working in both settings has given me a broad perspective. The NHS taught me how to assess and manage a wide range of conditions efficiently, while private practice has allowed me to spend more time focusing on movement quality, performance, and long-term results.

Movement has always been at the centre of what I do.

Outside of work, I’m an avid climber. I’d describe myself as your average boulderer - someone who enjoys dynamic movement, coordination-heavy problems, and climbs that make you think as much as they test your strength. It’s a constant reminder that performance isn’t just about power, but about control, timing, and confidence.

When I’m not climbing, I’m usually in the gym experimenting with different ways to train. I enjoy exploring new methods, equipment, and ideas, always looking for practical ways to improve strength, resilience, and movement.

That curiosity carries over into my clinical work. I’m not just interested in treating injuries, I want to understand why they happen and how to prevent them. My goal is to help people move better, feel stronger, and get back to doing what they enjoy, whether that’s everyday activity or high-level sport.

Having been both the athlete and now the clinician, I try to bring a balanced, practical approach to every session.”

What Does a Physiotherapist Actually Do?

Physiotherapy involves assessing, diagnosing, and treating issues affecting:

  • Muscles and joints
  • Tendons and ligaments
  • Nerves and movement patterns
  • Physical strength and mobility

A physiotherapist’s goal is to help reduce pain, restore movement, improve strength, and support long-term physical health.

At our Borough clinic, we work with a wide range of people, including:

  • Office workers with desk-related pain
  • Climbers and gym-goers
  • Runners and cyclists
  • People recovering from injury
  • Anyone wanting to move more comfortably day-to-day

Whether your pain started gradually or suddenly, physiotherapy can help you understand why it’s happening and what you can do about it.

“What’s Causing My Pain?”

One of the biggest misconceptions about pain is that pain automatically means serious damage.

In reality, discomfort is often caused by a combination of factors such as doing more than your body currently tolerates, reduced strength or mobility, repetitive movement patterns, lack of recovery, long hours sitting at a desk or sudden increases in exercise or activity.

In simple terms, your body hasn’t fully adapted to the demands being placed on it.

That’s why physiotherapy focuses not only on the painful area itself, but also on the underlying cause, helping reduce the likelihood of the issue returning in the future.

What’s a physiotherapist’s favourite phrase to say?

Well, it depends! (No really, that’s verbatim. Come for a session and find out for yourself!).

Should I Stop Exercising Completely?

Usually, no.

Complete rest is rarely the best long-term solution for most injuries or aches. In many cases, staying active in the right way is one of the most important parts of recovery.

That may involve:

  • Reducing intensity temporarily
  • Modifying certain movements
  • Improving strength and mobility
  • Adjusting training volume or frequency

The aim is to keep you moving safely while helping your body rebuild tolerance and resilience.

“I sit at a desk all day,  is that why I’m in pain?”

Potentially, yes,  but often it’s less about posture and more about prolonged positioning and lack of movement variety.

Many people working in and around Borough, London Bridge, and Central London spend long hours sitting at laptops, commuting with heavy bags, working under stress and exercising intensely outside work hours.

Over time, this combination can contribute to stiffness, neck pain, lower back discomfort, shoulder tension, and repetitive strain issues.

Physiotherapy can help improve movement habits, strength, mobility, and workload management to reduce these symptoms over time.

How long does recovery take?

Recovery varies depending on the issue, lifestyle demands, and consistency of rehabilitation.

Some injuries improve within a few weeks, while others take longer, particularly if the affected area continues being overloaded during work, exercise, or everyday life.

The most important factor is usually not just time, but how well recovery is managed.

Appropriate exercise, gradual loading, and consistent rehabilitation often lead to better long-term outcomes than complete rest alone.

Do I need to do exercises every day?

Your physiotherapist will tailor exercises specifically to your needs, goals, and schedule.

The most effective rehabilitation plans are realistic and sustainable. If something isn’t working for you, good physiotherapy should involve adapting the plan - not simply pushing through.

Open communication is key to long-term progress.

Will I lose fitness or progress while recovering?

In most cases, no.

You may temporarily reduce certain activities, but your body retains movement memory and adapts surprisingly well when rehabilitation is managed properly.

A good physiotherapy programme aims to keep you active where possible while gradually rebuilding strength, confidence, and tolerance to exercise.

How is physiotherapy different from osteopathy or chiropractic treatment?

All three professions aim to help people move and feel better.

Physiotherapy often places a strong emphasis on:

  • Exercise-based rehabilitation
  • Strength and conditioning
  • Injury prevention
  • Long-term movement improvement
  • Return-to-sport or activity planning

The right clinician should help you understand your injury, stay active during recovery, and feel more confident in your body long-term.
