On April 5th, climbing enthusiasts gathered at Font for an exclusive opportunity to delve into the art and science of route setting. Hosted by none other than the legendary Matt VC, former Team GB climber, seasoned route setter, and Ninja Warrior extraordinaire, along with Imi Bagnall-Smith, renowned London route setter and slab queen, the workshop promised a day of unparalleled learning and hands-on experience.

Participants were greeted with expert guidance from Matt VC and Imi, who shared invaluable insights and insider tips acquired from years of setting and climbing experience. The workshop was designed to be immersive and interactive, allowing climbers to get their hands chalky and experience the thrill of creating their own climbing challenges.

Small group dynamics fostered personalised attention, with a 1:4 instructor-to-participant ratio ensuring that each attendee received individualised guidance. To maximise the workshop's benefits, a climbing proficiency of at least V2 was recommended, enabling participants to actively contribute to the setting and testing processes.

In addition to hands-on experience, the workshop covered essential learning objectives, including understanding climbing grades, testing climbs effectively, setting objectives for routes, and prioritising health and safety on set. Participants gained a deeper understanding of the intricacies of route setting, enhancing their ability to evaluate and assign climbing grades while ensuring the safety and flow of each route.

Prior to the workshop, participants were encouraged to immerse themselves in the climbing world, watching videos of competitions, observing intriguing moves, and contemplating the nuances of each climb. Armed with their thoughts and ideas, participants arrived prepared to engage fully in the hands-on experience.

Overall, the Route Setting Workshop with Matt VC and Imi Bagnall-Smith was a resounding success, empowering climbers to craft their climbing adventures and elevate their skills to new heights. Attendees departed with a newfound appreciation for the art of route setting and a deeper understanding of the climbing community's intricacies.

Following the workshop, the climbs remained up for a week, allowing our regular climbers to test their skills on the routes crafted during the workshop. This extension provided an opportunity for the wider climbing community to experience and appreciate the creations of the workshop participants! Thanks Matt and Imi! We look forward to the next!
